Prevent Ice Dams with a Quality Roof De-Icing System in Omaha NE

Ice Melt Application snow removal services near Omaha NE:  Ice dams are notorious in the winter for ruining roofs. Formed at the edge of roofs, they prevent water from sliding off the roof, causing clogged cutters, accumulated ice, and roof leaks. If left unchecked, these ice dams can lead to partial or even full cave INS, as well as dangerous debris falling from your roof, and in the worst of cases, can even cause your gutters to detach and collapse. These are damages that are usually rather expensive to fix.

A roof de-icing system from Nebraska Snow Removal could solve your problem. Our ice melting services will prevent ice dams from forming on your roof and causing leaks and damage to the shingles. If you want to take preventative measures and protect your roof all winter long with a roof deicing system, call us today or click below to get a free estimate.

What are Ice Dams?

Ice dams are when heat from certain areas of your home warms part of the ice on your roof, causing it to roll down onto a cooler surface before freezing again. This accumulates over time, creating a dam formation that prevents water to be held back from running off the roof. Eventually, water will be forced back under the shingles, where, through moisture and changes in temperature, it causes damage to the shingles, exposure of the layering underneath, and eventually leading to leaks.

Ice Melt: The Basics

What is the science behind ice melt products? To put it simply, ice melters attract moisture to themselves to form a liquid brine, which generates heat and melts ice. The brine breaks the bond the ice has with the pavement so it can more easily be shoveled away.

There are four main types of ice melting products:

  • Rock salt
  • Ice melt
  • Calcium chloride
  • Pet friendly ice melted

Roof De-Icing Prevents Ice Dams from Forming on Your Roof

Ice Melt Application snow removal services near Omaha NE:  Nebraska Snow Removal de-icing system is the ultimate solution for combating and preventing ice dams. There are two main types of roof de-icing systems:

Roof De-Icing cables:  De-icing cables are a common solution that is easily installed on your roof. Generally seen in a wave pattern, these cables are simply secured to the roof just above the gutters. These cables then run a current that heats the surface area it is in, preventing the water and snow from freezing, and ensuring that run-off remains constant.

Radiant Edge Systems:  Radiant edge systems are installed at the end of the roof and run along the entire edge of the roof. They work by melting the snow at the edge of the roof, ensuring that water flowing down the roof stays melted as it passes through the gutters, preventing freezing from the top of the roof all the way down to the drainage system at the bottom. These systems provide a cleaner appearance than cables by being installed along the sides of the roof as opposed to across the front.

How to Avoid Ice Dams

Ice Melt Application snow removal services near Omaha NE: In many cases, new roofs may be installed with different technologies meant to curb ice dams, such as vented roof decking to keep your eaves from being cold enough to let dams form.

In addition, a properly insulated roof is the key to keeping your roof below 32º, at which point it will melt the snow. If the snow does not melt and refreeze in your eaves because of the heat escaping your roof, then you greatly reduce your concern for ice dams. Another benefit of effective insulation is the savings that you will enjoy in the form of conserved heat during the winter!

What Does Ice Do To a Roof?

When snow sits on your roof and builds into the corners of your roof, the heat from your house radiates up through the shingles. As it melts, a lot of the water runs off the roof pitch like it is designed to do, but as temperatures drop or it hits your eaves and gutters, that water freezes and turns to ice. As this ice continues to accumulate, it turns into something called an ice dam. As the water and ice continue to build on your roof, the ice forces your shingles apart and compromises the weather seal for your roof.

As the ice melts, you may begin to notice wet spots on your walls or in the corners of your ceiling, or other indications of leaks. These leaks can happen even in a new roof if the ice dams form in a certain way, so it is important that you keep on top of them throughout the winter. If you let these dams go, then they will do serious and permanent damage to your roof, which can then cause serious issues for the structural integrity of your roof, house frame, and introduce mold and rot into your home to the detriment of you, your family, and the value of your property.

THE COST OF SALT AND ICE MELT

Ice Melt Application snow removal services near Omaha NE:  When it comes to winter, a slip and fall is every contractor and real estate owner’s nightmare. Not only do you want to keep your site safe for tenants, customers, homeowners or the general public, but you don’t want the liability of a slip and fall.

Many believe they don’t have to worry about a slip and fall because they have insurance or that just won’t happen to them. Ultimately at the end of the day, nothing can prevent a slip and fall claim. However, here are a couple simple steps you can take to reduce liability to insure you keep yourselves, your contractors and your owners in the clear when a claim comes your way.

SAFETY

Be aware of the safety for people, equipment and property. There is never a good reason to sacrifice safety. Even if salt or ice melt seems excessive at times, think of it as an extra insurance policy.

DOCUMENTATION

Keep good documents. Make sure you and your snow removal contractor are keeping track of the services they are providing and that they are doing their best. As long as there is an effort made to keep your property in good and safe condition you’ll be okay.

STAY PROACTIVE

Using a local snow plowing service in its very nature is reactive. However when it comes to ice management, you can take a proactive approach. Visit your property on a regular basis and insure there is no ice or slipping hazards. Typically claims made during a large snow event won’t hold any legal claim. It’s the accidents that occur days after the storm that generally become a problem.

CONCLUSION

At the end of the day one slip and fall claim could cost as much as $50,000 and most serious claims end up closer to $400,000. Even if an insurance policy pays the claim, you’ll end up paying for it in the end with increased premiums.

Remember the basics: 1) Applying too little product doesn’t get the job done and could result in a slip and fall injury. 2) Applying too much can result in damage to property and the environment. With the experience we have, we will tell you what the right amounts are for the conditions. If you ever have any questions you always know that our Account Managers are just a phone call away.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do I know which ice melted product is best to use?

Start with the outside temperature. Rock salt, such as Diamond Crystal Winter Melt is great for melting ice at moderately cold temperatures (works down to 5°F). When the temperature falls below that, you should consider products such as Jiffy Melt (works down to -5°F). Other factors include activation speed, ease of handling and application, and desired features.

Do I really need the package instructions?

Yes. Proper application is important for optimal performance and safety of any ice melting product. More product does not necessarily mean better performance

What if my pet eats some Diamond Crystal ice melter?

Omaha NE ice melters are not produced under food grade conditions and therefore are not intended for human or animal consumption. However, two main ingredients in our most popular ice melters have low toxicity if inadvertently ingested in small amounts. Both have a Material Safety Data Sheet hazard rating of 1 on a scale of 0-4 (where 0 is considered minimal hazard no significant risk to health and 1 is slight hazard irritation or minor reversible injury possible). If ingestion occurs, make sure your pet has water available to drink, which is usually all that’s needed. Ingesting large amounts, however, can result in gastrointestinal irritation. If your pet shows signs of distress, contact your veterinarian. Always store any ice melted out of reach of children and pets. (Refer to Diamond Crystal ice melted Safety Data Sheets for more information).

Will my pet be harmed if it walks where an ice melted has been applied?

Generally, no. If an animal picks up too much ice melted material in its paws, it may experience some irritation–especially if it has dry, cracked skin–so it’s advisable to brush or wash off encrusted product residue. Also, since ice melters lower the water temperature, the mix of melting snow, ice and ice melters can be uncomfortably cold to an animal’s feet. To help protect your pet, follow application instructions by clearing the snow and ice from pavement once it’s melted, and/or covering paws with pet booties to avoid possible frostbite.

What else can I do to minimize winter risk and discomfort to my pet?

Practice good grooming of your pet, such as trimming excess hair from footpads and toes to reduce ice, snow and salt accumulation and make cleaning easier. Keep pets away from treated surfaces until snow, ice and ice melters have been cleared away. Doing so promptly will also prevent re-freezing. If your pet gets wet, dry its coat, and especially its paws, to prevent cracking.

What if my child eats some Diamond Crystal ice melter?

Diamond Crystal ice melters are not intended for human or animal consumption. If a few grams of ice melted are accidentally ingested, drinking water is usually all that is needed. Ingesting large amounts can result in gastrointestinal irritation. If your child shows signs of discomfort, contact your doctor. Always store ice melters out of reach of children and pets. (Refer to Diamond Crystal ice melted Safety Data Sheets for more information).

Will ice melters damage my grass and shrubs?

Because ice melters transform snow and ice into liquid, there is run-off. Too high a rate of application results in excess run-off from the driveway or sidewalk surface area, which is the most common cause of injury to bordering lawn or vegetation. Soil type, vegetation species and climate are also factors in runoff effect. Published university field tests indicate there may be slight differences between the tendencies of the common deicing chemicals to harm grass, but excessive application with any of them will harm vegetation. To reduce the risk of this damage, apply Diamond Crystal ice melters according to package instructions and promptly remove snow, ice and slush from the sidewalk or driveway surface after application.

Will Diamond Crystal ice melters damage my concrete?

Poured concrete needs time to cure and seal, so do not apply ice melters to first-year concrete. Do not use on porous or improperly cured concrete, precast concrete items, masonry, mortar, wood or other porous materials. Use only on properly placed, cured and sealed, air-entrained concrete. To reduce risk of damage, apply Diamond Crystal ice melters according to package instructions. You may also apply a quality water-repellent sealant to the surface prior to winter. Finally, promptly remove snow, ice and slush that develops on the concrete after any ice melted application.

Will Diamond Crystal ice melters hurt my carpeting or wood floor?

With proper application and ice removal, ice melted should leave little film or residue. Any extra residue carried in from people’s boots and shoes should be either sponged up with water before it dries or vacuumed promptly once dry.

Can I use ice melter on my deck?

Prior to using any ice melted, you should contact the manufacturer of your decking or sidewalk materials for its recommendation. We do not recommend using ice melters on wood decks, brick sidewalks, patios or the relatively new, non-wood decking material.

Can Diamond Crystal deicing salt be used on roofs to remove ice dams?

For obvious safety reasons, we recommend you do not use Nebraska Snow Removal ice melters for ice dam removal from roofs. The best solution is to consult a roof expert to prevent heat loss and ice dams from developing. Because there are a variety of ice removal options and roofing materials, you should consult your homeowners insurance or a professional roofer to determine the best method of removal for your type of roof.

Where can I find more technical safety information about Diamond Crystal ice melted products?

One source for more technical product safety information is safety data sheets (SDS), which Diamond Crystal maintains for each of its ice melted products. SDS sheets can be found on the product detail pages.

Will ice melters stain certain surfaces?

To avoid corrosion or staining, many ice melters should not be used on certain surfaces, and could leave noticeable staining effect on others. For example, do not use ice melters on porous or improperly cured concrete, concrete less than one year old, precast concrete items, masonry, mortar, wood or other porous materials. The following third party test results indicate relative degree of staining on various substrates.
